Testing iPhone post 23 Feb 2016 No Comment Eco is me Bulldog looking out our window Bulldog looking out our window Saving a Snapping Turtle 08 Jul 2013 No Comment Eco Tours It all started a long long time ago, actually it was this morning while driving to work but a story sounds much better if it was a long long time ago so we will stick with that. Anyhow, I was driving my chariot to work when I noticed a rather large snapping turtle in the middle of the road. A sea turtle might make a better story but that might be hard to believe since I live on a lake and not close to the ocean. Back to the story….so I saw a turtle in the road and felt the need to save it before it became road kill. Now I’m not some sort of saint or anything, I made the turtle get undressed for some nude photos before and during it’s lol rescue. Like I’ve seen done before, I tried to get it to bite a piece of wood so I could have it hold on while I grab it by it’s tail and carry it to safety. The turtle was laughing at my efforts and I’m pretty sure calling me some nasty names since it would attack the wood rather violently but never latch on long enough for me to pick her up by her tail. Noticing a neighbor walking up the street who is a retired cop, I figured he must have some experience with animals in the road or at least direct traffic so the turtle and me don’t get run over. Over the next 10-15 minutes we tried everything until we just took two boards and pushed the turtle across the road to safety. Note-it’s easier to push a large turtle across a road on it’s shell/back than when they are able to grab the road with their massage claws! Looking back, I have no doubt I saved the turtle from getting run over but I’m not sure if we put her on the side of the road she wanted to be on. Oh well, I guess it’s a 50/50 chance…. I searched Youtube for a proper method of moving snapping turtles and found the following video, it’s a little insane since the guy teaches you how to carry them by their belly but worth a look at if you want to save one or bring one home alive for turtle soup. My Tree Rat Friend 25 Apr 2013 No Comment Eco Tours I’m sitting at my desk enjoying the wonderful smells of spring time in New England, ah life is good! So, this tree rat keeps coming about 8′ from my window and is looking at me….so I toss out a few tree rat crack nuggets….peanuts. I got this fuc-er hooked and he is now posing for pictures. The Story of the Goose Step Father to a Family of Swans 17 Jun 2012 No Comment Spring in New England I couldn’t think of a better title to tell about a mother goose and her 6 kids that a female Canadian goose helped to raise. For the past month or so I’ve checked on the baby swans every day or so and quickly figured out they were missing a father. On a few occasions another swan would step in to fill the role but since they were born, a female goose has been standing guard watching over her adopted family. The female goose is welcome by the mother swan since she was in really tough shape watching her young during the first few days. But….the mother has her limits and the goose being within a foot of her kids crosses the lines and gets a strong hiss and some bites. Sort of odd since I can get within 2-3′ of her kids with an occasional hiss but never an attack. Some random notes for me: she started with 6 chicks, was down to 4 a month ago and lost another one this Saturday…..the turtles are hungry? What might be the male swan that helped out seems to have his own wife, he came over today but went back to his wife. Praying Mantis Pictures 15 Jun 2012 No Comment Uncategorized A month ago my mother gave me a cocoon of 50-100 praying mantis and I’ve been checking it almost every day for signs of “sawdust” that means they are eating their way out of the cocoon. Yesterday I noticed the sawdust and today……I saw 25 or so tiny babies crawling all over my veggie garden! At times it was stressful, at times my stomach turned seeing stuff I was not used to and at times my experiences had me in tears. At other times my heart and soul were so full, I felt so alive and connected… A couple things before I proceed with my trip report, my mileage was tainted since I have very limited Spanish,French and Creole speaking skills. Also, I went saying to myself that I would not publish “poverty” images but everyone has their own idea of what poverty is. The people of both the Dominican Republic and Haiti are very proud people and so what we might view as poverty, they view as their life with pride. None the less, my trip report will show images of kids without clothes, people begging, pigs and goats eating garbage, meat for sale that is covered with insects……not poverty images in my opinion rather I’m just showing life as it is. Here goes: Once upon a time a long long time ago a boy was born with a sense of adventure, he was a junky seeking adventure everywhere he went. This boy grew up wanting challenges and once he overcame them he searched for more and more. In his 30’s he was happy visiting and exploring Jamaica since it offered so many challenges but after 5 years he soon got bored. With high airfares to Jamaica the boy said fuc it and booked a trip to the Dominican Republic and Haiti to amp up his adventure. The boy had a month to learn Spanish, French and Creole but gave up after 3 weeks because he was either lazy or wanted more of a challenge. Armed with $3300 in cash, a few cameras and an Ipad he was ready to explore. Since a trip for me is about making as many connections before and during the trip, I escape from my introverted shell as much as possible and become the nice and maybe annoying “hey how are you, where are you from, what are your plans” type of guy as much as possible. It all started at the airport in Boston when I talked to pretty much everyone to form some connections. Come to find out that almost my entire flight was Dominicans that spoke no English. We did little hand gestures pointing at each other and then our luggage to say “watch my stuff while I venture off the the bathroom”. Finally a middle age backpacker sat next to me and we chatted about our journey in English. I didn’t know then but where she was staying was on my short list of places to visit….a connection...
